The Gargai Dam project, designed to increase Mumbai’s water supply by 440 million litres per day (MLD), has moved a step closer to approval. A ₹5,396-crore proposal will be submitted to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) standing committee for final sanction.
Planned on the Gargai River near Ogde village, the dam will be 69 metres high and 979.4 metres long, and will also include a hydroelectric power generation facility. The project is intended to help meet Mumbai’s rising water demand, which is projected to reach 6,535 MLD by 2041. Construction of the dam is expected to take 48 months, excluding the monsoon period.
Bids for the project have been submitted by Hyderabad-based Soma Enterprise and Mumbai-based Hindustan Construction Company, both quoting amounts higher than the BMC’s original estimate of ₹3,006 crore. Apart from construction, the overall project cost covers rehabilitation measures, environmental safeguards, and large-scale tree transplantation. The total estimated expenditure also includes 18% GST, water charges, and other civic taxes.
