Ranchi's Sewage Project Promotes Sanitation & Environment

The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) is presently in the process of implementing its sewage management system, entailing pipeline installation across nine wards with an estimated expenditure of Rs. 218 crore. The primary objective of this strategic undertaking is to establish connections between household septic tanks and sewer lines, thereby optimizing wastewater management throughout the city. To support the project, RMC has issued a tender valued at Rs. 4.60 crore.

The allocated funds will be utilized for the construction of inspection chambers, ensuring the direct channeling of household wastewater to the three sewage treatment plants situated in Lam Basti and Badagain. This initiative aims to streamline wastewater management, leading to a substantial enhancement of Ranchi's sanitation infrastructure.

While the project is driven by positive intentions, challenges are expected, especially for around 40,000 houses in the affected wards. The connection process may necessitate modifications to existing structures, causing apprehension among residents. Instances where septic tanks were constructed in the absence of pipelines during initial construction may require house demolitions for seamless integration.

Nitish Kumar, a resident of Hinoo, voiced his concerns, stating, "We are living in constant uncertainty, and our homes may face the looming threat of demolition." Responding to such concerns, Ameet Kumar, the administrator of RMC, assured that houses with approved maps and adequate side setbacks would encounter minimal complications. RMC has set a deadline of 9 months for households to link their sewer pipelines to the inspection chambers, underscoring the crucial role of community participation in ensuring the successful implementation of this sanitation infrastructure enhancement initiative.
