Rolls-Royce's Big Pitch: Co-Developing the Heart of India's AMCA

Rolls-Royce has proposed a comprehensive partnership for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) engine programme, offering full technology transfer and the creation of intellectual property within India if selected.

The proposal involves collaboration between the Indian government, the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), and an Indian industry partner to jointly develop a next-generation fighter engine, with a flight-ready system targeted by 2034. According to Sashi Mukundan, Executive Vice President, Transformation India, the initiative extends beyond engine supply to establish a complete aero-engine ecosystem in India encompassing design, development, manufacturing, testing, and lifecycle support.

Rolls-Royce plans to integrate these capabilities within a dedicated industrial complex supported by a robust domestic supply chain. The company has also committed to transferring advanced engine technologies with backing from the UK government, while enabling the development and ownership of intellectual property in India.

As a key component of India’s defence modernisation efforts, the AMCA programme aims to deliver an indigenous fifth-generation stealth fighter aircraft. If approved, Rolls-Royce’s proposal could significantly strengthen India’s aerospace and defence manufacturing capabilities, enhance technological self-reliance, and reduce long-term dependence on foreign propulsion systems.
