Long-Awaited ₹854-Crore Vadipatti–Melur Bypass Set to Launch

The long-awaited 30-km Vadipatti–Melur bypass is set to open this week, allowing commuters traveling between Trichy, Natham, and Vadipatti to entirely bypass Madurai’s congested city center. The new four-lane NH-744A corridor connects Vadipatti (NH-44) with Thamaraipatti (NH-38), cutting travel time between Vadipatti and Melur in half—from an hour to just 30 minutes.

Funded by NHAI at an estimated ₹854 crore, the project faced several delays after construction began in March 2020. Ahead of the official launch, NHAI officials are conducting trial runs to test FASTag scanners and toll plaza barriers. The bypass features three major flyovers at Sundarrajapuram, Mandhikulam, and Thamaraipatti, as well as an animal overpass and protective fencing through the Wavuthamalai reserve forest near Vadipatti. Local commuters have welcomed the opening, noting that bypassing city traffic will significantly reduce travel stress and fuel costs.
