Sky-High Ambition: Tamil Nadu Plans Six New Ropeways.

The National Highways Logistics Management (NHLML) has invited detailed project reports (DPRs) for six proposed ropeway systems in Tamil Nadu under the Union government’s Parvatmala Pariyojana initiative.

The proposed corridors — including locations such as Parvathamalai in Tiruvannamalai and the Glenmorgan Power House in Ooty — aim to introduce low-impact mobility solutions for hilly terrains and key pilgrimage destinations. With alignments ranging from 0.5 km to 4.6 km, consultants will be required to carry out comprehensive surveys, develop alignment alternatives, and evaluate environmental and social impacts. The projects also target improved last-mile access and reduced travel times.

The six-month tender process places strong emphasis on technical competence and financial eligibility for bidders. As part of a broader effort to improve connectivity in difficult landscapes, these ropeways are expected to help manage heavy footfall and offer safer alternatives to steep trekking routes. Meanwhile, Chennai Metro Rail is separately exploring the feasibility of cable-propelled transit systems in Mamallapuram, Udhagamandalam, and Kodaikanal.
