Sky’s No Longer the Limit: AAI Adds 11 New Pilot Training Slots

In a major boost to India’s self-reliance in aviation training, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has successfully completed the allocation of 11 new Flying Training Organisation (FTO) slots across seven regional airports. The move comes at a critical juncture as domestic carriers prepare to add hundreds of new aircraft, driving an estimated demand for over 30,000 pilots in the coming decade.

Currently relying heavily on foreign flight academies—where hundreds of cadets train annually—India aims to retain domestic talent and expenditure through this expansion. The newly awarded FTOs are expected to bring up to 120 additional training aircraft and advanced simulators into service, eventually producing around 750 licensed cadet pilots each year. Beyond strengthening the pilot pipeline, the initiative breathes new life into regional airport infrastructure and establishes a sustainable foundation for the nation’s rapidly expanding skyways.
