SoBo’s New Lifeline: The Tardeo-Nagpada Flyover is Open!

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis recently virtually inaugurated the Tardeo–Nagpada–Mumbai Central flyover, a key east–west connector in South Mumbai aimed at providing commuters with a smoother and safer travel route. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde joined the launch ceremony.

The 333-metre flyover replaces a 130-year-old British-era bridge at Mumbai Central railway station that had been declared unsafe and subsequently demolished. Its completion restores a vital link that had remained disrupted for nearly two years, helping reduce congestion on major roads such as Jehangir Boman Behram Road (formerly Bellasis Road), Dr Dadasaheb Bhadkamkar Marg (Grant Road), Pathe Bapurao Marg, and the Mahalaxmi station bridge.

Designed with a 7-metre-wide carriageway and spacious footpaths on both sides, the flyover spans 138.39 metres on the eastern side, 157.39 metres on the western side, and 36.90 metres within railway limits, seamlessly connecting Tardeo, Nagpada, and Mumbai Central.

The project was completed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation in just 15 months and six days—well ahead of schedule. Execution required close coordination with railway authorities, local ward offices, traffic police, and other agencies. While railway teams managed construction over active tracks, the BMC oversaw girder bracing, deck slab installation, casting work, and the development of approach roads.

Construction posed several challenges, including the relocation of utility lines belonging to the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST), demolition of obstructing structures with alternative arrangements for affected occupants, removal of a housing society boundary wall, and resolution of a related High Court case.

Following comprehensive load testing, structural stability checks, and receipt of a no-objection certificate from railway authorities, the flyover has been cleared for public use. Officials say the new structure will significantly improve traffic flow, offering a faster, safer, and more reliable commute across South Mumbai.
