OpenAI, the developer behind ChatGPT, is in preliminary talks with leading Indian data centre providers — Sify Technologies, Yotta Data Services, E2E Networks, and CtrlS Datacenters — to explore bringing its $500 billion global supercomputing initiative, Stargate, to India.
In parallel, OpenAI has been in discussions for over six months with Reliance Industries, which is developing what could become the world’s largest data centre in Jamnagar, Gujarat. These talks have focused on critical factors such as installed capacity, geographic reach, and power availability, which are key to finalising any partnership.
If successful, Stargate’s entry into India would significantly elevate the country’s position in the global AI infrastructure network. Reliance’s Jamnagar project, along with participation from top-tier domestic data centre operators, is poised to support India’s growing leadership in AI-driven digital transformation.
"India’s expanding data infrastructure makes it a natural contender for such next-gen projects," a source noted, highlighting the country’s strategic importance in OpenAI’s global roadmap.
