The Government of Uttar Pradesh has unveiled an ambitious urban transformation initiative, allocating Rs 20,000 crore each to the cities of Meerut, Mathura, and Kanpur over the next five years. This Rs 60,000 crore investment aims to modernize key tier-II cities, enhance quality of life, and attract private sector participation through a mix of short-, medium-, and long-term development projects.
Multiple state departments—including Housing, Urban Development, and Public Works—have been directed to design and implement projects in a time-bound and measurable manner.
Aligned with national urban development schemes such as AMRUT, the Smart Cities Mission, and HRIDAY, this initiative underscores Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The initiative kicked off with the Meerut Development Authority (MDA) unveiling a comprehensive blueprint titled “Revitalising Meerut: Transforming the City Through Theme-Based Urban Development Projects.” The plan outlines 93 projects worth Rs 18,262 crore across six priority areas:
Enhancing public spaces
Improving connectivity
Upgrading utilities and social infrastructure
Promoting industrial and housing development
Preserving cultural heritage
Implementing targeted redevelopment
This initiative marks a significant step in reshaping the urban landscape of Uttar Pradesh’s emerging cities.
