UP’s Digital Leap: Targeting 2 GW of Data Center Power by 2030

Uttar Pradesh is aiming to significantly expand its digital infrastructure footprint, with plans to develop more than 2 gigawatts (GW) of additional data centre capacity by 2030. The initiative reflects the state's growing focus on emerging technologies and its ambition to become a leading destination for digital investments in India.

During a recent review of the Uttar Pradesh Data Centre Policy-2021, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to prepare a new policy framework that is more investor-friendly, practical, and aligned with evolving industry requirements. The proposed policy overhaul is expected to strengthen the state's competitiveness in attracting large-scale investments from technology companies and data centre operators.

Emphasising the strategic importance of the sector, the chief minister noted that data, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital infrastructure will serve as the foundation of the future economy. He stressed the need for Uttar Pradesh to proactively build capacity and create an enabling ecosystem to secure a leadership position in the rapidly growing digital landscape.

The planned expansion forms part of a broader effort to establish Uttar Pradesh as a major data centre hub, supported by improved infrastructure, streamlined regulations, and enhanced ease of doing business. By encouraging investment in data centres and related technologies, the state aims to generate employment, strengthen its digital economy, and support the increasing demand for cloud computing, AI applications, and digital services.

Officials believe the upcoming policy reforms will play a crucial role in attracting both domestic and international investors, positioning Uttar Pradesh as a key pillar of India's digital infrastructure growth over the coming decade.
