Vadinar’s ₹1,570Cr Makeover: India’s Next Big Ship Repair Hub

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the development of a state-of-the-art ship repair complex at Vadinar with an estimated investment of ₹1,570 crore.

The project will be implemented through a collaboration between Deendayal Port Authority and Cochin Shipyard   representing a major boost to India’s maritime infrastructure. Planned as a brownfield project, the facility will feature a 650-metre jetty, two floating dry docks, advanced workshops, and associated marine infrastructure. Located strategically near key shipping routes and close to major ports such as Mundra Port and Kandla Port, the complex is expected to emerge as an important hub for servicing both Indian and international vessels.

India currently faces a shortage of infrastructure for repairing large ships, especially vessels longer than 230 metres. The Vadinar facility aims to bridge this gap by enabling repair and maintenance services for ships up to 300 metres in length, significantly enhancing the country’s domestic ship repair capabilities. The project is expected to reduce reliance on overseas shipyards, cut repair costs, and strengthen India’s position as a competitive global maritime services destination.
