Green Energy’s New Heartbeat: The 1,350 MW Shift at Sileru

The Upper Sileru Powerhouse, one of Andhra Pradesh’s oldest hydroelectric stations, is set to undergo a major transformation with the addition of a 1,350 MW pumped storage project, significantly boosting the state’s power generation and energy storage capacity.

Located in the forested Chintapalli region of Alluri Sitarama Raju district, the project has been a vital part of Andhra Pradesh’s hydro network since its commissioning in 1967–68. Developed in two stages, the station currently has an installed capacity of 240 MW, generated through four 60 MW units. Despite operating beyond its original design life, it continues to deliver reliable performance due to sustained renovation and modernisation efforts.

The plant draws water from the Sileru River through a weir at Guntawada and benefits from consistent inflows supported by high annual rainfall, enabling dependable generation of around 575 million units of electricity each year.

The upcoming pumped storage project will comprise nine reversible units of 150 MW each, utilising the Guntawada and Donkarayi reservoirs. Scheduled for completion by 2029, the facility will play a crucial role in peak load management and renewable energy integration, strengthening the state’s transition towards a more sustainable and resilient energy system.
