NHPC has begun wet commissioning of the third generating unit at the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, marking an important milestone toward the completion of India’s largest hydropower project.
The 250 MW Unit 3 has successfully cleared underwater mechanical checks and is now undergoing tests under actual operating conditions. Wet commissioning involves allowing water to flow through the turbine to assess its performance, safety and reliability before synchronisation with the national power grid.
Located on the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border, the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project has a total installed capacity of 2,000 MW and is being developed as a run-of-river scheme. The first unit has already been commissioned, while trial operations for the second unit have been completed. The remaining units will be brought online in a phased manner to ensure stable and reliable power generation.
NHPC officials described the development as a critical achievement for both the company and the hydropower sector, highlighting the project’s role in strengthening renewable energy capacity and enhancing national energy security.
