CM Vijayan Launches WET: Digital Dawn for Kerala's Water Distribution

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the Water Efficient Thrissur (WET) project on June 16, 2025 — the state's first digitally monitored water distribution system — at the Thrissur Corporation. Developed under the AMRUT scheme by ULCCS, the project aims to deliver clean, purified drinking water efficiently and reliably.

The Chief Minister emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring safe drinking water access across all local self-government institutions. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, 55% of rural households now receive clean water, with full coverage achieved in 115 panchayats and nine assembly constituencies. In Thrissur’s Ollur zone alone, 9,000 households have already been connected through the WET project.

Water is sourced from Peechi Dam, treated, and stored at Thekkinkadu Maidan before being distributed to 18,500 consumers. The system enables real-time digital monitoring, allowing prompt detection of leaks, illegal connections, and supply disruptions.

Mayor M.K. Varghese presided over the event, and Revenue Minister K. Rajan launched the new online billing system. Future upgrades under WET 2.0 will include 4,000 smart meters and an advanced water quality monitoring system under AMRUT 2.0.
