The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) is awaiting final clearance from the National Dam Safety Authority (NDSA) to begin commissioning the first three units (250 MW each) of the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, located near North Lakhimpur on the Arunachal Pradesh–Assam border.
With a total installed capacity of 2,000 MW, the Subansiri project is India’s largest hydroelectric venture to date. NHPC had earlier announced plans to commission the initial three units by June 2025, with the remaining five units (also 250 MW each) to be brought online in a phased manner by May 2026.
The Subansiri project is a run-of-the-river hydroelectric scheme with water storage features, designed to generate approximately 7,421.59 million units of electricity annually in a 90% dependable year. Once fully operational, the project will significantly enhance regional power supply and make a substantial contribution to India’s renewable energy and decarbonization goals.
