THDC Cracks Open Vishnugad Dam: 444 MW Green Gigawatt in Sight

THDC India has marked a significant milestone in the development of the 444 MW Vishnugad-Pipalkoti hydro-electric project. The initiation of concrete work in Block no. 1 of the main dam represents a pivotal step forward in the project's construction.

Additionally, the tunnel boring machine (TBM), featuring double shield technology, accomplished the impressive task of constructing a 24-meters section of a 9.86-meters diameter Head Race Tunnel (HRT) in a single day. This achievement stands as a national record for the largest diameter TBM tunnel bored in a single day in the challenging Himalayan geology. The accomplishment included the installation of lining, filling of pea gravel, and grouting, contributing to the overall progress of the project. Over the last two months, more than 550 meters of the total 11.7 km HRT has been successfully constructed through the TBM.

Significant advancements have been made in the civil work associated with major project structures, including the power house, transformer hall, dam, HRT, and TRT area.

Located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, this run-of-the-river project entails the construction of a 65-meters high concrete dam on the Alaknanda river, utilizing a gross head of 237 meters. The project is expected to generate a substantial 1,657 mega units of electricity, contributing to the region's power generation and overall energy landscape.
