Bilaspur's Green Gold: BPCL's ₹100 Cr Bio-Gas Plant

To enhance urban solid waste management in Chhattisgarh, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) will invest approximately ₹100 crore to establish a Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) plant in Bilaspur. A tripartite concession agreement was signed between BPCL, the Bilaspur Municipal Corporation, and the Chhattisgarh Biofuel Development Authority (CBDA) at the Bilaspur Collectorate.

The plant will be developed on 10 acres of land in Kachhar and is designed to process 150 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day, generating 5 to 10 tonnes of biogas. This initiative aims to support organic farming, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and create an estimated 30,000 employment opportunities annually.

Additionally, an Integrated Energy Unit (IEU) for biogas refueling and electric vehicle charging is proposed at Koni, adjacent to the existing RDF plant. The Bilaspur Municipal Corporation has allocated land for this unit at a concessional rate. Produced through anaerobic digestion of organic waste, CBG contains high methane content and can effectively substitute CNG in automotive, industrial, and commercial applications.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on January 17, 2025, in the presence of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai and Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao.
