Coal India Ltd (CIL) has signed a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IRCON International Ltd (IRL) to jointly develop railway infrastructure aimed at improving coal transportation for CIL and its subsidiaries.
This is CIL’s second such agreement, following a similar MoU signed with Konkan Railway Corporation in August 2025. The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s focus on streamlining coal evacuation, as emphasised in a recent review meeting by the Ministry of Coal, which called for expedited progress on key railway projects in Chhattisgarh, including the Gevra–Pendra Road and Kharsia–Dharamjaigarh corridors.
As the producer of over 76% of India’s coal output as of August 2025, CIL depends significantly on rail for efficient freight movement. The partnership with IRCON is expected to strengthen logistics, reduce transit delays, and support the growing demand for coal transportation, particularly from power and industrial sectors.
