The Ministry of Coal, in its second action plan for FY26, has announced plans to hold three auctions for 25 commercial coal mines. This move aims to boost domestic coal production, reduce import dependence, and enhance long-term energy security.
As part of its broader goal to operationalise 100 new coal mines by FY30, the ministry targets adding 500 million tonnes (MT) of annual production capacity. In FY25, 13 new mines began operations, contributing 83 MT toward this goal. An additional seven commercial mines are expected to commence production in FY26.
These initiatives are part of the government’s strategy to meet rising energy demand by increasing domestic coal availability. The auctions and production targets are designed to ensure affordable, secure, and self-reliant energy. The action plan also highlights the importance of timely execution and close collaboration with stakeholders to achieve long-term production milestones.
