Gevra Rising: India’s Mega-Mine Set to Claim the Global Crown

Coal India Limited’s Gevra mine is poised to become the world’s highest coal-producing mine next year, with output projected to touch 63 million tonnes, overtaking leading mines in the United States, a senior company official said.

The Gevra mine is operated by South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL), a subsidiary of Coal India, and is currently the largest opencast coal mine in India.

Operational since 1981, the mine is expected to produce around 56 million tonnes in the ongoing financial year. It has already received environmental clearance to increase its production capacity to 70 million tonnes per annum, setting the stage for further expansion and higher output in the coming years.
