Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has reaffirmed India’s commitment to a low-carbon growth trajectory, highlighting the country's goal to increase the share of natural gas in its energy mix from the current 6% to 15% by 2030.
Speaking on recent advancements, the Minister outlined key initiatives including the development of syngas and coal gasification projects at Talcher, and the operation of 113 compressed biogas (CBG) plants—with an additional 78 in the pipeline. India is also set to expand its natural gas infrastructure, with plans to grow the gas pipeline network from 25,429 km to 33,475 km and enhance LNG import capacity from 52.7 MTPA to 66.7 MTPA.
Currently, around 1.52 crore households are connected through piped natural gas (PNG), and the number of CNG stations has crossed 8,150 across the country.
In parallel, the government’s push for clean energy includes a target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030. Other key milestones include the distribution of over four billion LED bulbs under the UJALA scheme, 10.33 crore LPG connections provided under the Ujjwala Yojana, and a target of five million tonnes of green hydrogen production.
To further support renewable energy deployment, the reduction in GST rates on solar and wind equipment is expected to lower overall project costs by approximately 5%.
