India Powers Past 50% Clean Energy Goal, Five Years Early!

In a landmark achievement in its clean energy journey, India has surpassed 50% of its installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, meeting a key Paris Agreement goal five years ahead of the 2030 target set under its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

This milestone underscores India’s growing global leadership in climate action, driven by the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Commenting on the achievement, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, said:“In a world seeking climate solutions, India is showing the way. Achieving 50% non-fossil fuel capacity five years ahead of the 2030 target is a proud moment for every Indian. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership continues to drive Bharat’s green transformation—paving the path towards a self-reliant and sustainable future.”

India’s rapid progress has been powered by flagship initiatives such as:

PM-KUSUM (for solarising agriculture), PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (free solar power for homes), Solar Park Development Scheme, National Wind-Solar Hybrid Policy

These programmes have catalyzed large-scale deployment of solar, wind, and bioenergy, delivering not only environmental gains but also economic and social benefits—from job creation and rural income growth to air pollution reduction. The bioenergy sector, in particular, now plays a crucial role in supporting rural livelihoods while contributing to India's clean energy output.

This achievement positions India as a model for sustainable development, demonstrating that economic growth and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
