India's Solar Giant: Maharashtra's 16 GW Power Revolution

Maharashtra is approaching the final stages of implementing the world’s largest 16,000 MW decentralised solar power initiative under the Mukhyamantri Saur Krushi Vahini Yojana (MSKVY) 2.0.

Spearheaded by the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL), with strong backing from private investors and local administrations, the project is designed to deliver affordable and sustainable electricity, primarily targeting agricultural consumers. As of now, 1,972 MW has been commissioned, with total capacity projected to reach 5,000 MW by the end of September 2025.

While an MSEDCL official indicated that the entire project is expected to be completed by March 2026, sources suggest it could extend into late 2026, depending on logistical and regulatory clearances.

The initiative is supported by private investments of approximately ₹65,000 crore, facilitating the development of solar parks across the state. By locating these parks within five kilometers of substations, the project aims to minimize transmission losses. Additionally, the cost of power generation is estimated at just ₹3 per unit, making it highly cost-effective for farmers and rural consumers.

This transformative effort underscores Maharashtra’s leadership in renewable energy adoption, while also strengthening grid efficiency, rural electrification, and climate resilience in the state.
