DPL Rises: 660 MW Unit Marks Major Comeback

The Durgapur Projects Limited (DPL) is poised for revival as the West Bengal government moves forward with plans to add a new 660 MW thermal power unit—Unit No. 9—to its existing plant.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier announced an investment of ₹800 crore to rejuvenate the facility, of which ₹400 crore has already been utilized. The addition of the new unit is expected to significantly enhance power generation capacity while creating employment opportunities for local youth and redeployed employees. The Chief Minister recently reviewed the progress of the project alongside Cabinet Ministers Arup Biswas, Malay Ghatak, and Pradeep Majumdar.

Originally established in 1961 under the leadership of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, DPL had faced years of decline despite several revival attempts. At present, Units 7 and 8 generate 600 MW and 650 MW respectively. The upcoming Unit 9 is expected to further strengthen DPL’s turnaround and contribute to the state’s energy security.
