Coal India Limited (CIL) has signed a partnership agreement with Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) to expand the thermal power facilities at DVC’s Chandrapura Thermal Power Station in Jharkhand, with an estimated investment of ₹21,000 crore.
Under the joint venture, two ultra-supercritical units of 800 MW each will be added, creating a combined generation capacity of 1,600 MW. The project will be financed on a 50:50 equity basis between CIL and DVC and is expected to commence operations by 2031–32. Coal for the new units will be supplied by Central Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of CIL.
The expansion is aimed at strengthening India’s baseload power generation capacity, enhancing efficiency, and meeting rising national and regional energy demand. Strategically located within the coalfield region, the project is expected to deliver cost-effective and reliable power generation, reinforcing India’s energy security goals.
