Bornagar Power Hub: Securing the Northeast's Energy Future

A new high-capacity transmission hub is being developed at Bornagar in Assam under the North Eastern States Strengthening Scheme (NESS), with the objective of reducing the Northeast’s dependence on the flood-prone Bongaigaon substation.

At present, the Bongaigaon substation serves as the primary gateway for power flow from mainland India to the region. However, its location in a flood-prone zone poses a significant risk to power supply stability, particularly for Assam. The upcoming Bornagar power hub, spread across Gadaapith and Bhogpur villages in Bajali district, will initially function as a 400 kV switching station, with provisions for future capacity upgrades.

The facility will create an alternative transmission pathway by re-routing sections of existing transmission lines connecting Bongaigaon to Balipara and Alipurduar. As part of the NESS programme, the project is designed to strengthen regional transmission infrastructure, enhance grid reliability, and reduce transmission losses. These improvements are expected to lower power procurement costs over time, delivering long-term benefits to consumers across the Northeast.
