Chenab Project Electrifies a Greener Jammu & Kashmir

NHPC and JKSPDC's Chenab Valley Power Projects Pvt. Ltd. (CVPPPL) is promoting a major project in Kwar Village, Kishtwar District, Jammu & Kashmir. This ambitious project comprises building a Run-of-the-River Hydropower Project for Rs. 4,526.12 crores.

It has 540 MW of installed capacity, a 47-meter Concrete Gravity Dam, a modern water conductor system with two subterranean pressure shafts, and a 5.2-km headrace tunnel. The power production configuration includes a cavern with three 180 MW Francis turbine units and a 5.6 km tail race tunnel to return flow to the Chenab River. Estimated energy output is 1,975.54 MU per year with 90% reliability.

This program has several advantages. It drastically reduces fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by producing clean energy. It also produces building and operation jobs, boosting local infrastructure and commercial potential. It also solves India's power shortfall, improving energy security, and adds Chenab River basin flood management.

However, various obstacles threaten project achievement. Its remoteness and difficult terrain complicate logistics. Environmental considerations need careful planning to protect the Himalayan ecology. Social factors for community resettlement and wellbeing demand considerable attention and extensive measures. To guarantee project success, finance and delay mitigation must be managed carefully.

As on January, 2024. The project has begun the stage of receiving approvals. Clearances were obtained for the project. Work on the project is scheduled to begin in February of 2024.
