Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) will establish new substations and upgrade existing infrastructure under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to address persistent overload issues and improve power reliability.
Frequent power cuts and voltage fluctuations have been reported in several key Chennai neighborhoods, including Broadway, Pudupet, Mylapore, T Nagar, and Perambur, as well as extended areas like Ambattur and Madhavaram. To tackle this, the Chennai and Kanchipuram regions will receive 30 new 33/11kV substations, and 20 existing substations will be equipped with additional transformers to enhance load capacity. Suburban areas such as Avadi and Tambaram will also benefit from the upgrades.
Statewide, TNPDCL plans to construct 133 new 33/11kV substations at a cost of ₹1,320 crore, alongside upgrades to existing substations valued at ₹189 crore. The total project investment of ₹1,509 crore is fully funded by the Rural Electrification Corporation (REC). Tamil Nadu currently operates 789 such substations, and the number will exceed 900 upon project completion.
Priority has been given to overload-prone areas to ensure swift implementation. TNPDCL officials confirmed that tenders will be issued shortly, with all urban works expected to be completed within one year.
