Green Grid Go: Vizag's ₹8,386 Cr. Transmission Project Approved

The National Committee on Transmission (NCT) has approved a major interstate transmission system (ISTS) project worth ₹8,386 crore to facilitate upcoming green hydrogen and green ammonia initiatives in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

Titled "Transmission System for Proposed Green Hydrogen/Green Ammonia Projects in Vizag Area, Andhra Pradesh (Phase-I)", the scheme will be implemented under the tariff-based competitive bidding (TBCB) framework, with REC Power Development & Consultancy Limited (RECPDCL) appointed as the bid process coordinator.

The project is designed to support up to 5,000 MW of green energy demand, with NTPC Green Energy already seeking 2,500 MW of general network access (GNA) starting September 2028.

With a 30-month gestation period, the scheme includes:

Construction of two new substations at Pendurthi (Vizag) and Khammam-II, Development of three new 765 kV double-circuit transmission lines, spanning a total of 650 km

Key infrastructure assets along the corridor are owned by leading transmission operators:

Power Grid Corporation of India operates the Srikakulam and Khammam substations

Adani Energy Solutions owns the Warangal (New) substation, which was originally developed by Essel Infraprojects and later acquired through Warora Kurnool Transmission Ltd. (WKTL)

This strategic transmission development marks a significant step toward building a robust green energy infrastructure to support India’s emerging hydrogen economy and decarbonization goals.
