HP Starts Land Acquisition for Mandi Hydroelectric Project

The Himachal Pradesh government has initiated the land acquisition process for the Thana Plaun hydroelectric project in Mandi district.

In a recent preliminary notification, the state government announced its intention to acquire 250 bighas of private land for the development of the 191 MW project. The land acquisition collector has been authorized to conduct a survey before the commencement of the acquisition.

The private land earmarked for the project spans 21 villages across 12 gram panchayats in Kotli, Sadar Mandi, Jogindernagar, and Padhar tehsils. The project involves the construction of a 106-meter-high gravity dam with a full reservoir level of 716 meters. The powerhouse is designed to house three power generating units of 50.33 MW each, along with two additional units of 20 MW each, contributing to a total electricity production capacity of 191 MW.

Situated at the confluence of the Beas river and Rana Khad near Thana village, the project is under the auspices of the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation (HPPCL). The estimated cost of the project, according to a 2018 report, is Rs 2,223 crore.

Originating in 2009, the project has faced delays over the years, with a similar land acquisition notification issued in 2021.
