Kalima Lights the Way for Sustainable Himachal Pradesh

The Kalima Hydro Power Project in Shanag, Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, spearheaded by Kalima Hydro Power Private Limited, is a significant initiative in the realm of hydroelectric power. With a cost of Rs. 39.04 Crores and a capacity of 4.2 MW, this project harnesses the potential of Shanag Nallah using run-of-the-river hydroelectric technology.

Technically, the project features a concrete dam standing at 15 meters high, facilitating water diversion through a dedicated tunnel to a surface powerhouse located in close proximity to the dam site. Two Francis turbines, each capable of producing 2.1 MW, are installed to convert water energy. The infrastructure includes a 1.5 km headrace tunnel and a 0.5 km tailrace tunnel.

The anticipated benefits encompass clean energy generation, estimated to produce 18 million units of electricity annually, thereby potentially catering to the energy needs of around 15,000 households. Moreover, the project holds promise for economic development, job creation, and infrastructure enhancement by improving roads and access to remote areas. However, concerns linger regarding potential environmental impacts such as disruption to local ecology, deforestation, and soil erosion, emphasizing the necessity for fair compensation and resettlement for affected communities.

Presently, the project is in the pre-construction phase, with ongoing processes for environmental clearance, land acquisition, and social impact assessments. Addressing environmental and social concerns remains integral to the project's progression as it navigates through these early stages toward eventual implementation.

As on January, 2024. The project is now in the stage of receiving approvals. The project has received all necessary clearances.
