NLC India's Rs 19,422 Crore Talabira Power Project Nears Takeoff

NLC India is on the verge of selecting a contractor for the ambitious Talabira thermal power project, valued at Rs 19,422 crore and consisting of three units generating 800 MW each. The crucial decision will be made shortly with the unveiling of the price bids.

Competing for the contract are two reputable power equipment manufacturers, BHEL and L&T-MHI. The chosen turnkey contractor for this landmark project is anticipated to be finalized in January. Notably, NLC India has opted to augment the project's capacity by adding another 800 MW unit, transforming it into an impressive 3,200 MW powerhouse upon completion.

Originally conceptualized for Sirkazhi in Tamil Nadu, the project's location was later shifted to Talabira in Odisha to mitigate the expenses associated with transporting coal from Talabira mines to the southern region. The power plants are expected to incorporate cutting-edge ultra supercritical technology.

The power generated by the completed 2,400 MW will be distributed among various regions, including Tamil Nadu (1,500 MW), Puducherry (100 MW), Kerala (400 MW), and Odisha (400 MW). Concurrently, NLC has ramped up coal production from its Talabira mines, aiming to produce 14.4 million tonnes of coal in the fiscal year 2023-24.
