Powering the Future: Modi's 2 GW Nuclear Grid Project

On 27 July 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for a key power transmission project by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (POWERGRID) in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu. The project is designed to evacuate 2,000 MW (2 GW) of nuclear power from Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 and 4 (2x1000 MW) under the Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS).

Executed by POWERGRID Kudankulam Transmission Ltd, the scheme includes the construction of a 400 kV double-circuit (quad) transmission line from Kudankulam to Tuticorin-II GIS Power Station, along with the establishment of two 400 kV GIS line terminal bays at Tuticorin-II GIS. Once operational, the project will facilitate the transmission of clean, sustainable nuclear energy to Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Puducherry, enhancing regional energy security and supporting India’s commitment to 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030.

The foundation stone ceremony was attended by Governor RN Ravi, Union Ministers Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu and Dr. L. Murugan, along with senior state ministers and officials.

As of 30 June 2025, POWERGRID operates 284 substations, more than 1,80,533 ckm of transmission lines, and a transformation capacity of 5,66,831 MVA, with a system availability exceeding 99.84%, underscoring its critical role in India's power infrastructure.
