Powering Up: Waaree and Vikram Solar Spark India’s BESS Boom

India’s rapidly expanding renewable energy sector is driving significant investments in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), as companies seek to enhance grid reliability and support the integration of intermittent renewable power sources.

Waaree Energies has outlined plans to develop 20 GWh of BESS manufacturing capacity by FY28, covering battery cells, battery packs, and utility-scale energy storage containers. Through its subsidiary, Waaree Energy Storage Solutions, the company has proposed investments of ₹10,000 crore in the battery storage segment, including an ₹8,000-crore battery gigafactory in Andhra Pradesh. The company aims to operationalise 3.5 GWh of BESS production capacity by FY27.

Similarly, Vikram Solar has announced plans to establish 15 GWh of BESS capacity by 2030. The company intends to initially focus on battery pack assembly and containerised storage solutions using procured cells, while gradually expanding into integrated battery cell manufacturing. As part of its long-term growth strategy, Vikram Solar also plans to develop 7.5 GWh of battery cell manufacturing capacity.

These investments highlight the growing role of energy storage in India's clean energy transition, enabling greater renewable energy adoption, improving grid stability, and supporting the delivery of reliable round-the-clock green power.
