₹17,000 Crore Boost for Delhi’s Power Grid

The Delhi government has announced an investment of ₹17,000 crore over the next three years to strengthen the capital’s power infrastructure and ensure a reliable electricity supply.

Under the capital expenditure plan, Delhi Transco and the city’s power distribution companies will upgrade transmission lines, grid substations and the distribution network. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta chaired a review meeting to assess ongoing projects and finalise an action plan extending to 2029.

Officials noted that Delhi’s peak power demand reached around 8,400 MW in 2025 and is rising by four to five per cent annually, driven by population growth, increased use of air conditioners and household appliances, and the adoption of electric vehicles. Demand typically peaks in June and July. If current trends continue, daily peak demand could climb to 11,500–12,000 MW by 2030 and further to 19,000–20,000 MW by 2040.

Chief Minister Gupta said the investments are aimed not only at adding capacity but at ensuring uninterrupted, safe and high-quality power supply across the city. The meeting also reviewed progress under the Prime Minister’s Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme.
