With financial support from the Central Government, the Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation (TANTRANSCO) will establish four new substations as part of Phase 3 of the Green Energy Corridor (GEC) project, aimed at enhancing the state’s renewable energy infrastructure.
Project Details:
A 400 kV substation will be constructed at Saliyamangalam in Thanjavur. 230 kV substations will be developed at Chidambaram, Thakkalai, and Papanasam. A senior TANTRANSCO official stated, “The objective is to strengthen the transmission network to ensure seamless evacuation of renewable energy—wind, solar, and hydro—to major load centres across Tamil Nadu.”
Strategic Importance:
Tamil Nadu targets an additional 100 billion units of green energy generation, requiring substantial upgrades in transmission infrastructure. The new substations are key to:
Transferring wind power from southern and western districts to northern and delta regions, Supporting agricultural electricity needs, helping to ease financial burdens on DISCOMs, Ensuring reliable supply during peak irrigation periods
Implementation Challenges:
Officials acknowledged ongoing challenges, particularly land acquisition, but emphasized the long-term benefits of integrating renewable energy into the grid and reducing dependence on conventional power sources.
This initiative marks a significant step in Tamil Nadu’s energy transition and reinforces its leadership in renewable energy adoption.
