Tata Power-DDL & Nissin Electric Launch India's First PVT Micro Substation

Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL), in partnership with Japan’s Nissin Electric, has commissioned India’s first micro substation equipped with a Power Voltage Transformer (PVT)—a breakthrough aimed at delivering cost-effective, reliable power directly to residential users.

Unlike conventional systems, the PVT-based micro substation can convert high-voltage power directly from transmission lines to low-voltage output, minimizing infrastructure layers and making it ideal for remote and densely populated urban areas. The innovation is part of the International Demonstration Project on Japan’s Energy Efficiency Technologies, supported by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). The project agreement was signed on August 21, 2024.

Serving approximately nine million consumers in North Delhi, Tata Power-DDL sees this as a scalable solution for challenging terrains and fast-growing urban centres, enabling efficient network expansion with reduced infrastructure costs.

The pilot could serve as a blueprint for nationwide adoption of PVT-enabled micro substations, advancing India’s goals for smarter, more energy-efficient power distribution.
