Torrent Power Defends 3,000 MW Karjat Energy Project

Torrent Power has responded to environmental concerns regarding its proposed 3,000 MW pumped storage project in Karjat, clarifying that all project components fall completely outside the Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary and its Eco-Sensitive Zone.

Located roughly 16 km from the sanctuary with no construction taking place near the sacred Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga temple, the project secured its statutory clearances following an intensive 18-month evaluation process. The comprehensive review included expert assessments, detailed impact studies, site visits, and a public hearing.

While requiring approximately 233 hectares of forest land, the project is designed to deliver critical long-term energy storage. It is projected to produce around 6,570 million units of electricity annually—displacing 4.33 million tonnes of coal usage and curbing CO2emissions by 5.85 million tonnes every year compared to coal-fired power plants.
