Centre Pledges Rs 2 Lakh Cr for Tamil Nadu Highways

Tamil Nadu Highways Minister Aadhav Arjuna announced that the Union government has pledged highway infrastructure projects valued at Rs 2 lakh crore for the state, contingent upon state-level cooperation.

Financial allocations have seen significant upward revisions, with the Central Road Fund commitment rising from Rs 500 crore to Rs 1,000 crore, alongside a doubling of the road safety fund.

To address persistent traffic congestion along the Chennai–Tiruchy National Highway corridor, the state has formally asked the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to draft a detailed project report (DPR) focused on expanding the Chennai–Kanniyakumari segment of GST Road to an eight-lane configuration.

Additionally, a high-level bridge project has been proposed to establish a direct connection between Katpadi railway station and the Palar bridge, with the state administration initiating steps to draft its corresponding DPR.
