DMRC Opens Bids for Central Vista Underground Expansion

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has invited bids for the design and construction of twin underground tunnels and two stations as part of Phase V(A) of the Delhi Metro along the Central Vista corridor.

The scope of work includes building twin tunnels between Shivaji Stadium and Central Secretariat using Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs), along with a cut-and-cover tunnel section extending to Kartavya Bhawan. The contract also covers the construction of the underground Central Secretariat and Kartavya Bhawan stations, including entry and exit structures, pedestrian subways, and associated civil works.

The selected contractor will be responsible for both design and execution, encompassing tunnelling, structural works, station development, utility integration, and related infrastructure. Given the complexity of the area, the project will involve detailed geotechnical investigations, continuous ground monitoring, and the use of advanced construction technologies to ensure safety and limit disruption to surrounding structures.

As the proposed tunnels will pass close to existing operational metro lines, meticulous coordination will be required to maintain uninterrupted services. DMRC plans to deploy real-time instrumentation systems to monitor ground movement and protect nearby buildings and utilities.

Situated within a high-security administrative zone, the Central Vista corridor houses several key government offices. The new metro link is expected to enhance connectivity in the area significantly. Project timelines will be finalised following the completion of the bidding process.

The tender follows the Union Cabinet’s approval of three new corridors under Phase V(A) of the Delhi Metro project, with an estimated outlay of ₹12,014 crore, adding more than 16 km to the network. The cleared corridors include RK Ashram Marg–Indraprastha (via Central Vista), Tughlakabad–Kalindi Kunj, and Aerocity–Indira Gandhi Domestic Terminal-1.

The RK Ashram Marg–Indraprastha stretch will offer direct metro access to Kartavya Bhawan and nearby offices, benefiting nearly 60,000 employees and around two lakh daily visitors. The expansion is expected to ease traffic congestion, reduce pollution, and improve daily commuting for thousands of residents and office-goers.
