After recently inviting bids for the elevated section between Vasantkunj and Thakurganj, Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has now issued a ₹150 crore tender for constructing a state-of-the-art depot at Vasantkunj for the upcoming East–West corridor of the Lucknow Metro.
The proposed depot, with an estimated cost of ₹150 crore, will function as a crucial hub for train stabling, inspection, and maintenance. Designed on the lines of the existing Transport Nagar facility, it will integrate advanced, technology-driven systems to ensure safe and efficient metro operations.
The depot will be equipped with specialised machinery, including a pit wheel lathe for maintaining wheel profiles, synchronised pit and mobile jack systems for lifting operations, bogie turn tables, automatic train washing plants, electric bogie shunters, and re-railing and rescue vehicles. These facilities are intended to maintain high standards of reliability and operational readiness for trains running on the East–West corridor.
Sustainability will be a core feature of the depot’s design. Similar to the North–South corridor depot, it will incorporate solar power generation systems, zero-discharge mechanisms, dual plumbing networks, a sewage treatment plant (STP), an effluent treatment plant (ETP), and a combined STP-ETP unit to optimise space and energy use. A comprehensive water storage system will also be developed to meet operational and emergency requirements.
UPMRC Managing Director Sushil Kumar said the issuance of the second major tender and the acceleration of preparatory works mark steady progress towards implementing the corridor.
The 12-km East–West Corridor will connect Charbagh to Vasantkunj in Lucknow, featuring seven underground stations between Charbagh and Chowk and five elevated stations from Thakurganj to Vasantkunj. The project, with an estimated investment of ₹5,801.05 crore, is slated for completion within five years from the start of construction.
