The Ministry of Railways has initiated work on three major railway projects aimed at enhancing connectivity and boosting economic activity in Rajasthan’s border regions.
The projects will strengthen the rail network across Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Barmer through the development of new railway lines. According to Amit Sudarshan, Chief Public Relations Officer of North Western Railway, the proposed routes include the Anupgarh–Khajuwala, Jaisalmer–Barmer–Bhiladi, and Khajuwala–Jaisalmer lines. The 187-km Anupgarh–Khajuwala line, estimated at ₹2,277 crore, will link the border town of Anupgarh with Bikaner and is currently awaiting further approvals, with a detailed project report (DPR) already prepared.
Meanwhile, the Jaisalmer–Barmer–Bhiladi line is planned to span around 380 km, and the Khajuwala–Jaisalmer line approximately 260 km, with final location surveys currently in progress for both.
These projects are expected to reduce reliance on road transport in border districts such as Bikaner, Jaisalmer, and Ganganagar, while improving accessibility to remote areas and supporting regional economic growth.
