The ongoing construction of underground stations for the Phase-II project of Chennai Metro Rail (CRML) is making significant progress. Notable developments are taking place at key locations such as Otteri, Pattalam, and Perambur along Corridor-3, which spans from Madhavaram to SIPCOT via Thirumayilai.
Tunnel work along this corridor is gaining momentum, accompanied by the initiation of station construction. A distinctive feature of the Pattalam station is its stacked design, where the concourse is situated on the first level, the upper track line on the second level, and the downward track line on the third level. This innovative approach adds a unique dimension to the Phase-II project.
The initiation of construction activities in this corridor is crucial, especially considering that a section of the Madhavaram-Taramani stretch encountered delays in the project's early stages due to the cancellation and subsequent re-floatation of tenders. This setback led to a delay of more than a year in the overall project timeline.
The Phase-II project comprises three corridors covering a total distance of 116 km, aimed at enhancing mobility in Chennai. These corridors include Madhavaram to SIPCOT via Thirumayilai (Corridor 3), Light House to Poonamallee via T Nagar (Corridor 4), and Madhavaram to Sholinganallur via Medavakkam (Corridor 5).
Corridor-3, stretching over 45.4 km, stands out as the longest corridor in Phase II, connecting the northern and southern parts of the city. It traverses various neighborhoods, including Madhavaram, Purasawalkam, Perambur, Royapettah, Thirumayilai, Mandaiveli, Adyar, Taramani, Perungudi, Thoraipakkam, Siruseri, and other significant areas, thereby significantly improving transportation connectivity across Chennai.
