Chennai Rail on Roll: Fourth Line to Connect Beach and Egmore by April

The Southern Railway is on track to finalize the fourth line project connecting Chennai Beach to Egmore railway stations by the end of March 2024. This pivotal track infrastructure initiative, initiated in early September, is progressing smoothly and is anticipated to be commissioned by the first week of April.

In the realm of civic works, the piling work for the construction of a retaining wall along the Cooum river has been successfully completed. Currently, 60 percent of the retaining wall work is in progress, alongside the expansion of the bridge across Buckingham Canal near Chennai Park railway station. Consequently, modifications to the foot over bridges (FOBs) at Fort, Park Town, and Park (MRTS) railway stations are actively underway.

Given that the fourth line will traverse the underground subway near the Reserve Bank of India, efforts are being made to shift the collection well and pump house situated in the proposed alignment to accommodate the new line. The Southern Railway has initiated the execution of the overhead electricity line, installation of signal and telecommunication systems, and the stocking of rail panels and concrete sleepers for the upcoming track.

Upon completion, the project is poised to segregate suburban train services, freight, and long-distance trains. It will also facilitate the operation of more long-distance trains towards the Gudur section, thereby alleviating congestion at Chennai Central railway station. The foundation work for the passenger platform and fabrication structure at Fort station has commenced as well.
