Chennai's Next Act: Metro & HUDCO Re-Imagine Urban Spaces

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has partnered with the Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for revitalising under-utilised urban spaces across Chennai.

The initiative focuses on transforming key locations into vibrant public zones. Notable sites include the historic Broken Bridge area in Adyar, spanning approximately 14,120 sq. m, which is set to become a leisure and tourism hub featuring adventure zones, beachfront cafés, and wellness loops.

Other targeted areas include:

6,176 sq. m beneath the MRTS line near Indira Nagar Railway Station, 9,270 sq. m beneath the Velachery Rail Over Bridge

These spaces will be reimagined as multifunctional civic zones, incorporating retail outlets, modern lighting, children’s play areas, and enhanced pedestrian accessibility.

The ₹53 lakh DPR contract was signed in the presence of CMRL Managing Director MA Siddique. The project aims to activate transit-adjacent areas to boost public amenities, urban tourism, wellness, and local economic development, creating engaging and inclusive community spaces.
