Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) has advanced the Coimbatore Metro project by issuing a work order to the Coimbatore Corporation for conducting a Land Plan Survey (LPS)—signaling the start of groundwork for key metro corridors. The survey work is currently focused on a 1.4 km stretch along Sathyamangalam Road, from Textool Bridge to Surya Hospital.
CMRL has allocated ₹2 crore for the LPS in this area. According to a senior official, digital surveying and utility mapping—including drainage, water supply, electrical, gas, and telecom lines—has been completed using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR).
Upon completion of the LPS, the cost of relocating underground utilities will be estimated and submitted to CMRL for approval. Simultaneously, utility mapping is in progress on two major corridors:
Corridor 1: 20.4 km from Ukkadam Bus Stand to Neelambur, via Coimbatore International Airport.
Corridor 2: 14.4 km from Coimbatore Railway Junction to Valiyampalayam Pirivu.
Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran reported that 75% of the LPS is completed on Sathyamangalam Road. The District Collector has directed the civic body to finish building valuation within two weeks, after which the land acquisition process will begin.
