Fourth Line Green Light: Tambaram-Chengalpattu's Capacity Boost

Southern Railway has completed the Final Location Survey (FLS) for a proposed fourth railway line between Tambaram and Chengalpattu, covering 31 km and designed for speeds up to 160 kmph—making it the first in the region to exceed the standard 110 kmph design limit.

The new line is intended to ease severe capacity constraints on the current network, which hinder the expansion of suburban services despite growing commuter demand. This congestion has led many commuters to shift to private vehicles, worsening traffic conditions along GST Road.

To improve operational efficiency, the project will create dedicated tracks for suburban and express trains. The new line will be constructed on the eastern side of the existing tracks to minimize land acquisition and will be fully fenced for enhanced safety.

Estimated to cost ₹713.4 crore, the project is currently under review by the Railway Board’s project evaluation committee. The Tamil Nadu government, through CUMTA, has urged for fast-track approval in view of the rising passenger demand along the corridor.
