The Telangana Assembly has approved a resolution supporting the state government’s proposal to take over the Phase I network of the Hyderabad Metro from Larsen & Toubro (L&T), as part of a broader strategy to expand metro connectivity.
According to an official release, the move is intended to accelerate metro expansion in the public interest, following a comprehensive review of the challenges associated with the next phase of development. The existing Phase I network, spanning 69 km, is currently operated under private management.
The state government has already submitted proposals to the Union Government for Phase II expansion, comprising Phase II(A) of 76.4 km and Phase II(B) of 86.1 km, along with updates on the project’s current status.
Citing technical, legal, and operational complexities in executing Phase II through a joint venture model, the Assembly endorsed the government’s plan to address concerns raised by the Centre. The proposed takeover of Phase I by Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is expected to enable a more streamlined and coordinated approach to future expansion.
