The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has achieved a significant milestone in the city’s metro expansion with the first major tunnel breakthrough on Metro Line 7A. The 1.6-km tunnel, constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM), will connect to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), overcoming complex engineering challenges along the way.
Excavation began on September 1, 2023, requiring precise navigation above the operational Metro Line 3 and beneath the Sahar Elevated Road and various underground utilities. The segment includes two stations—Airport Colony (elevated) and CSMIA (underground)—providing direct airport access for commuters and travelers.
Metro Line 7A is part of a larger corridor linking Colaba to Vasai-Virar via Mira-Bhayander, with further connections to Thane and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport. Currently, 59% of the line's construction is complete.
The breakthrough was marked by a ceremonial event attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, along with Skill Development Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, MLA Parag Alwani, MMRDA Metropolitan Commissioner Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, and Additional Commissioners Vikram Kumar and Ashwin Mudgal.
This development reflects ongoing progress in Mumbai’s transit infrastructure, aiming to reduce road congestion and enhance urban connectivity. With its strategic alignment, Line 7A is set to play a key role in the city’s future-ready transportation network.
