The Government of Maharashtra has approved a revised plan for Mumbai Metro Line 5, along with its extension and the newly proposed Line 5A, providing a significant boost to urban transport infrastructure in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).
The updated project cost has increased to ₹18,131 crore, reflecting design modifications and expanded connectivity objectives. The integrated corridor is expected to improve links between key growth centres such as Thane, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, and Ulhasnagar, benefiting daily commuters and enhancing access to emerging residential and industrial zones.
Initially sanctioned in 2017 as a 25 km elevated corridor, the project has undergone multiple revisions due to land acquisition and rehabilitation challenges, particularly in densely populated areas like Bhiwandi and Kalyan. A major redesign in 2023 introduced an underground stretch between Dhamankar Naka and Temghar to minimise surface disruption, though it led to higher costs.
The revised plan replaces the earlier extension to Kalyan APMC with a new Line 5A route connecting Durgadi to Ulhasnagar via Aadharwadi, Khadakpada, and Bhoirwadi, improving last-mile connectivity. Additionally, a double-decker structure at Ranjnoli Junction will integrate a flyover with the metro line to reduce congestion and optimise urban space.
